About dr. Thomas smith
Hello, I’m glad you’re here. Allow me to introduce myself. I’m Dr. Thomas Smith – a therapist, licensed clinical social worker and a Qualified Supervisor in the State of Florida (SW14389). I received my doctorate from the University of Washington in 1981 and have been practicing since 1983. I’m a Clinical Fellow (13755) and an Approved Supervisor in the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy. I also have been a Professor of Social Work at Florida State University for over 30 years.
In addition to serving patients and teaching continuing education courses, I’ve written about 100 publications including a couple books. Currently I am a therapist with the Crossroads Counseling and Wellness Center and I serve as the Clinical Director of Honeylake Clinic, a Christian psychiatric residential treatment center.
ABOUT MY METHODS
I’ve always been curious about different therapy models and their strengths and limitations. The most difficult part of using any particular model is fitting it to my idiosyncracies. So, therapy models represent how a person has created a way of thinking or doing that fits his or her personality. I’ve probably studied about a dozen therapy models and think that their most important requirement is that I have is to remain flexible in my thinking about people and their problems.
I’m trained in applied behavior analysis, cognitive behavior therapy, and dialectical behavior therapy. In addition, I use mindfulness-based cognitive therapy and solution-focused therapy. Finally, I have extensive training and experience in marital and family therapy. And that’s what I try to do: solve your problems in a respectful way.
